Advice and Guidelines for Visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon His servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions and those who follow them upon righteousness until the day of Judgement

    To proceed

This article aims to present and gather some advice and guidance for visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah in order to raise their awareness of proper manners during their visit to the sacred mosques. May Allah benefit us through it and grant us guidance and success

    Avoid Taking Photos
Do not take pictures or record videos inside the Prophet’s Mosque. This may lead to showing off (riyaa), which the Prophet - peace upon him - warned against. He said "Certainly, the thing I fear most for you (my nation) is minor shirk, which is Ar-Riyaa (doing worship to be seen and praised by the people). Allah will say on the day of judgement when people will be recompensed for their Deeds Go to the one who you were showing off to(with your worship) so look to them, do you find with them any reward
Narrated by Ahmad and graded Authentic by shaykh Al-Albaani

This becomes even more serious when it involves taking pictures of living beings, which the majority of scholars hold impermissible. The evidence for this are many, from amongst them is the hadith "The people with the most severe punishment on the day of judgement are those who take pictures (of living things)" Agreed upon by bukhari and Muslim

Likewise, taking video recording of the call to prayer (Adhan) goes against the Sunnah, which actually encourages one to listen and repeat (the adhaan) after the mu'adhin, ask Allah to send his blessings upon the Prophet, and ask Allah to grant his prophet Al-Waseelah
The people of knowledge have mentioned an important rule concerning the superiority of some actions over others, "The most superior action at any time is the one that is closest in agreement to the sunnah at that time." For this reason, if you are reading the Qur’an and the Adhan begins, you should stop and respond to it. So what is the condition of the one who stands when the adhaan begins and takes a video recording instead? To Allah we turn for help
The same applies to taking video recordings during classes; many scholars do not allow this for similar reasons

Turn Off or Silence Your Phone
Switch off your phone or put it on silent so you do not disturb others, especially if it contains musical ringtones or other inappropriate sounds. The people of knowledge have mentioned that from the most severe sins nowadays is listening to music inside the mosque. So Fear Allah

    Maintain Proper Conduct
Avoid useless talk and worldly conversations that are inappropriate for the mosque. Do not raise your voice without need. Remember that you are in a place of worship, meant for prayer, remembrance of Allah, recitation of the Qur’an and other forms of worship by which one draws closer to Allah.
Allah says : "In houses (mosques), which Allah has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to be honoured), in them His Name is glorified in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings
Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his commentary
That is, Allah the Exalted commanded that they be raised, meaning that they be purified from impurity, idle talk, and actions and statements that are not appropriate within them. As Ali ibn Abi Talha narrated from Ibn Abbas regarding this noble verse
In houses (mosques) which Allah has permitted to be raised [Qur'an 24:36]
He said : Allah - Glorified be He - forbade idle talk in them
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah - May Allah have mercy on him - said in his book Manasik al-Hajj
Raising one's voice in the mosques is prohibited, and in the Mosque of the Prophet it is even more strongly prohibited. It is authentically established that Umar ibn al-Khattab - May Allah be pleased with him - saw two men raising their voices in the mosque and said : "If I knew that you were from the people of this city, I would have punished you severely. Voices are not to be raised in his (the prophet's) mosque
    Narrated by al-Bukhari
The point here is that the prohibited raising of the voice refers to arguments, disputes, and similar worldly matters. This is what Umar - May Allah be pleased with him - and other Companions forbade, as al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab mentioned in Fath al-Bari

Do Not Walk in Front of Someone Praying
Allah's Messenger - peace upon him - said : "If the person who passes in front of another person in prayer knew the magnitude of his sin he would prefer to wait for forty (days, months or years) rather than to pass in front of him." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Also, the one praying should use a barrier (sutrah) to prevent people from passing in front of him
It is also recommended that the person praying place a sutrah (a barrier or object serving as a screen) in front of him to prevent people from passing directly before him, based on - the Prophet’s saying : "When one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him draw close to it, so that Shaytaan will not interrupt his prayer.” (Reported by Abu Dawud and Al-Nasa’i and authenticated by Al-Albani)
The scholars have mentioned that the few minutes a person spends patiently waiting can prevent him from falling into an sin that the Prophet - peace upon him - forbade. Some Muslims pass in front of those who are praying without giving it much thought, even though they may spend far more time standing outside the mosque talking with one another than they would have needed to wait for the worshipper to finish his prayer. Had they been patient and refrained from passing in front of those praying, it would have been better for them

    Stay After Fajr Until Sunrise
Remain in the mosque after Fajr prayer with the congregation until the sun rises to get the reward of Hajj or Umrah
The Messenger of Allah - peace upon him - said: "Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun has risen, then he prays two Rak'ah(salaat ud-duhaa), then for him is the reward like that of a Hajj and Umra
    h
The scholars have stated that the time for this prayer begins when the sun has risen to the height of a spear in the sight of an observer. This is approximately fifteen minutes after sunrise. You can find this indicated on the prayer timetable boards inside the Prophet's Mosque

    Zamzam Water
Seek out and benefit from the blessing of Zamzam water, according to your intention when drinking it, as mentioned in the authentic narration of Jabir ibn Abdullah - May Allah be pleased with him - who said : "I heard the Messenger of Allah - peace upon him - said
The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk" (Authenticated by Al-Albani in Irwa' al-Ghalil, no. 1123)
Imaam Al-Shawkani said in Nayl al-Awtar
: "This indicates that Zamzam water benefits the one who drinks it for any purpose for which it is drunk, whether concerning worldly matters or matters of the Hereafter, because the phrase for whatever purpose it is drunk is general in meaning
Among its benefits is seeking healing, for it is from Allah’s mercy toward His servants that He has placed in the blessed water of Zamzam a special quality through which He grants healing from illnesses to whomsoever He wills, out of His generosity and favor
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah - peace upon him - said : "The best water on the face of the earth is Zamzam water; it is a nourishment that satisfies hunger and a cure for illness" (Classed as hasan by Al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, no. 1161)

Its benefit is not limited to a particular place; one may benefit from it whether residing or traveling, and whether drinking it in Medina, Mecca, or elsewhere
You will find Zamzam water available inside the Prophet's Mosque in the containers designated for it

Attend Funeral Prayers and Visit Al-Baqi
Attend the funeral prayer and accompany the funeral procession to Al-Baqi in order to attain the immense reward mentioned in the hadith : "Whoever attends a funeral until the prayer is offered will have one qirat (portion of reward), and whoever attends until the burial is completed will have two qirats. It was asked, “What are the two qirats?” He replied, Like two great mountains
    (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Take heed and remember the Hereafter when visiting the cemetery, as the Prophet - peace upon him - said
I had previously forbidden you from three things, including visiting graves. Now visit them, for indeed there is admonition and a lesson in visiting them...”
    (Reported by Ahmad)
After the burial is completed, it is recommended to stand by the grave, supplicate for the deceased, seek forgiveness for him, and ask Allah to grant him steadfastness. Uthman ibn Affan - May Allah be pleased with him - reported : "The Prophet, when he had finished burying a deceased person, would stand by the grave and said : “Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask that he be made steadfast, for he is now being questioned.” (Reported by Abu Dawud and authenticated by Al-Albani)

Do not forget to supplicate for the deceased when visiting the cemetery. It is narrated in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet - peace upon him - taught the following supplication

"السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون ويرحم الله المستقدمين منا والمستأخرين أسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية" رواه مسلم في صحيحه عن عائشة رضي الله عنها

Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of these dwellings, among the believers and Muslims Indeed, if Allah wills, we shall join you. I ask Allah to grant well-being to us and to you

Attend Lessons and Gatherings of Knowledge
Attend the lessons and lectures of the scholars and teachers at the Prophet's Mosque, for doing so carries tremendous virtue and reward, as established in the Sunnah. Whoever comes to a circle of knowledge to learn or teach is given a reward comparable to that of a person striving in the cause of Allah. Gatherings of knowledge and remembrance are among the gardens of Paradise, and the Messenger of Allah - peace upon him - supplicated for those who listen to, preserve, and convey beneficial knowledge

The Prophet - peace upon him - said : "Whoever comes to this mosque of mine for no purpose other than to learn something good or to teach it, is like one striving in the cause of Allah. And whoever comes for any other purpose is like a man looking at the belongings of others" (Sahih Ibn Majah)

Commenting on the phrase “like a man looking at the belongings of others” Imaam Al-Sindi explained : That is, he is like someone who enters a marketplace neither to buy or to sell, but merely to look at the goods of other people. What benefit does he gain from that

    Imaam Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi said
Attend the gatherings of knowledge as listeners and beneficiaries. Ask the people of knowledge for guidance and understanding. If you neglect knowledge altogether and turn away from it completely, you will be ruined and among the losers. Do you not know that occupying oneself with knowledge is among the greatest acts of worship, the most virtuous deeds and means of drawing near to Allah? A gathering of knowledge that you attend is better for you than the world and all that it contains, and a single benefit that you learn and gain from cannot be measured or equaled by anything

To learn about ongoing lessons and lectures in Medina, you may follow platforms that announce classes and scholarly gatherings

The reward for praying in Quba Mosque is immense. The Prophet - peace upon him - said : "Whoever purifies himself in his home, then comes to Quba Mosque and offers a prayer therein, will have a reward like that of an ‘Umrah" (Reported by Ibn Majah and authenticated by Al-Albani)
